What’s the Difference Between an LPN and a BSN?

Request Info

If you’re exploring nursing careers, understanding the key differences between a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) will help you choose the right path for your goals. These two roles differ significantly in education length, scope of practice, salary, and career opportunities.

Education and Training Requirements

LPN programs typically take 12-18 months to complete at community colleges, technical schools, or career colleges. The curriculum covers fundamental nursing skills including basic patient care, vital signs monitoring, medication administration, wound care, and clinical rotations. After completing an approved program, you’ll take the NCLEX-PN exam to qualify to become licensed.

BSN programs are four-year bachelor’s degrees that provide comprehensive nursing education. In addition to all LPN fundamentals, BSN curriculum includes advanced pathophysiology and pharmacology, nursing research and evidence-based practice, leadership and management, community health nursing, and extensive clinical hours across multiple specialties. BSN graduates take the NCLEX-RN exam to become Registered Nurses (RNs).

Scope of Practice

LPNs provide basic nursing care under the supervision of RNs or physicians. They check vital signs, assist with personal care, administer medications, change wound dressings, collect lab samples, and monitor patient status. LPNs typically work in long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers, physician offices, and home health agencies.

BSN-prepared RNs work more independently with broader responsibilities. They conduct comprehensive patient assessments, develop nursing care plans, administer complex treatments, supervise LPNs and nursing assistants, educate patients and families, coordinate care across healthcare teams, and make critical clinical decisions. BSN nurses work in all healthcare settings including hospitals, specialty clinics, and leadership positions.

Salary and Job Outlook

The salary gap between LPNs and BSN-prepared RNs is substantial. BSN nurses earn significantly more than LPNs, with the gap increasing through experience and specialization.

LPNs have limited advancement opportunities beyond gaining expertise in settings like geriatrics or home health. Many LPNs use their license as a stepping stone while pursuing RN degrees through bridge programs.

BSN nurses have extensive advancement opportunities including specialty certifications, leadership roles like charge nurse or director of nursing, advanced practice positions (Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Anesthetist) with graduate degrees, and administrative roles. Many healthcare employers now prefer or require BSN preparation for RN positions, especially in acute care hospitals.

Which Path is Right for You?

Consider an LPN program if you want to enter nursing quickly, prefer working in long-term care or community settings, or plan to work while considering further education.

Consider a BSN program if you want the widest career opportunities, are interested in hospital nursing or specialty areas, plan to pursue advanced practice nursing, or prefer higher earning potential from the start.

What's the Difference Between an LPN and a BSN?

Making Your Decision

While an LPN license gets you working quickly, a BSN is the more direct path if your long-term goals include specialty practice, leadership, or maximum earning potential. Many students find that starting with a BSN saves time and money compared to earning an LPN license and later bridging to an RN degree.

Arizona College of Nursing offers a 3-year BSN program designed to prepare you for success as a registered nurse in healthcare environments.
