The path to becoming a nurse is often described as a calling, and for good reason. Nursing schools allow students to grow academically and personally as they master clinical skills and terminology, prepare for exams, and balance their day-to-day lives. Still, there may be times that feel like an endurance test for both mental and emotional well-being.
While students spend their days preparing to care for patients, it is important to also practice self-care. At Arizona College of Nursing (AZCN), our goal goes beyond graduation. We want you to enter the workforce with the confidence and support systems needed to thrive for decades.
The Reality of Nursing Student Stress
If you have ever felt your heart race before a clinical rotation or stayed up all night worrying about an exam, you are not alone. It is common for nursing students to face a unique blend of stressors, including:

Academic Volume: Between your classes, exams, clinicals, and just grasping the terminology, the amount of information required to provide safe, effective care is immense.
Clinical Anxiety: Moving from the classroom to a real-world healthcare setting brings a new level of responsibility. Interventions to enhance clinical skills and resilience, along with strategies to reduce anxiety, are needed to make the transition smooth.
The Balance: Many students are managing families, jobs, and financial obligations along with a full-time study schedule.
Recognizing your stressors is the first step toward being able to manage them properly. Understanding that it is okay not to be okay is a vital part of your professional development and how you can thrive in the field.
How AZCN Supports Your Journey
We believe that a supported student becomes a successful nurse. Stress looks different for everyone, so our approach to student wellness has many components and can be tailored to you and your needs.
At AZCN, we know that while stress can come from academics, it can also come from outside the classroom. Whether it be a financial issue, a family emergency, or something else personal causing you to struggle, we provide a network of resources to help. If you have a life-stressor, we want to know about it so we can give you the right support. We are here to offer internal guidance or help connect you with external professional resources to ensure that one bad week does not derail your entire career path.
Your Student Achievement Coaches are just those individuals who can help and should be thought of as your primary allies throughout your college career. These coaches are here to help you navigate the “life” side of school and specialize in helping you manage external stressors that can interfere with your studies, whether that is time management, study strategies, or dealing with any other personal hurdles.
In addition to Student Achievement Coaches, NCLEX Success Specialists (NSS) are also there to guide you. As you progress through Core, NSS’s are there to support your preparation and reduce anxiety that surrounds this milestone. Our coaches work tirelessly to provide you with the mental and content preparation and confidence to feel prepared and succeed.
AZCN also prioritizes transparency, offering direct access to leadership so you can ask hard questions. Whether you are curious about curriculum changes, clinical placements, or institutional updates, we want our students to feel comfortable reaching out and never feel like they are left guessing.

Additionally, every faculty member brings their own unique flair to their students and their wellness. We are proud to have faculty and staff who remember what it is like to be in your shoes. Across our campuses, you will find instructors that may provide anxiety-reducing tools, incentives and rewards to celebrate both the big and small wins, and a helping hand when needed.
Insights From AZCN Faculty/Staff
Our instructors are more than just experts in nursing; they are advocates for their students and their mental health. They recognize that stress and anxiety are big hurdles many face when working toward their degree, and they are dedicated to building support directly into their teaching.
Andres Salas emphasizes the importance of addressing these hurdles head-on.
“I see stress and anxiety as one [of the biggest hurdles for my students]. I spend one week of the semester talking about stress, and I spend one week of the semester talking about anxiety.”
He often takes students for mental health walks and finds that his experience allows him to connect deeply with students of all ages. When covering sensitive topics like depression, students often feel comfortable approaching him about their own experiences.
“I always ask, ‘OK, is it working? How do you feel? How so?’ and I’m able to connect with them. They see me as someone…they can actually learn from,” Andres adds.
Allison Cutler also shares this passion for mental health and self-care.
“Mental health is my specialty and…I talk a lot about self-care to my students. I try to drill that into them that you have to be able to take care of yourself to be able to take care of others and to be successful in the program,” she explains. Beyond the clinical skills, Allison’s focus is on building her students’ inner strength.
“I do just genuinely enjoy trying to inspire students and keep them motivated and get them more confident in their abilities so that they can improve their test-taking strategies and be successful in the program,” Allison shares.

Sometimes, a little boost in morale makes all the difference. Mikeal Kos notes that “there is a shift in students when we are…highlighting and praising them. We’re also rewarding them [with] swag, gift certificates, scrubs.”
Even simple tools like this can help release anxiety and build confidence during intense moments.
Stress Management Techniques
While we provide you with tools to help you and your mental health, there are many more techniques you can use to help yourself:
Brain Breaks: Whether in your clinical placement or your own home, taking even just five minutes of silence to focus entirely on your breathing can help reset your nervous system and calm you down.
Setting Small Goals: Instead of looking at the entire year or semester, look at the next few hours and ask yourself, what is one thing you need to accomplish? Progress, big and small, deserves to be rewarded.
Physical Activity: You do not need an hour at the gym. Even a 15-minute walk can significantly boost your mood and cognitive function.
Find Your Support System: Let people in on your schedule, upcoming exams, and do not be afraid to ask your friends and family for help when needed. Nursing school can be a beast, but by having open communication and letting people in, you can overcome it. Additionally, nobody understands what you are going through more than your peers in your cohort. Lean on each other, not only for the sake of study groups, but for moral support and encouragement.
Moving Forward
Becoming a nurse can be a significant undertaking, but it is not one you must navigate alone. While the academic and clinical demands are high, you have a dedicated group of individuals at AZCN ready to step in and step up whenever you need them.

Being a great student does not mean everything is easy. Instead, it means knowing when to turn to the resources available to you and the people around you for help. You are here to care for others, and we are here to care for you throughout your nursing journey.
