Some people spend their whole lives searching for their calling. But for one of our dedicated faculty members at Arizona College of Nursing’s Las Vegas campus, she knew what she wanted to do at the early age of five. Back then, it was just playing school with her next-door neighbor. Today, it’s about guiding the next generation of nurses through their college education.
Melodie Nutter, PhD, has spent over 40 years in the nursing field and has seen it all from her early days as a candy striper to earning her PhD degree. Her journey into the profession was expedited by her mother’s advice.
“My mother told me, you’re not going to lay around here all summer. You need to go down to the Community College and see what you’re going to do,” Dr. Nutter recalled.
That push led her to a nursing career that spanned 25 years in a trauma center in Detroit. Here, she thrived on the intensity of the emergency room (ER).
But after decades of clinical practice, Dr. Nutter found herself ready to inspire the next generation of nurses, finding Arizona College of Nursing at the perfect time. She described finding the college as “a match made in heaven,” and “like Cinderella putting on her slipper.” It was a natural fit that felt meant to be from the very beginning.
Life at the College
Three years later, Dr. Nutter is a pillar of AZCN’s Las Vegas campus and is known for her dedication to her students. Dr. Nutter often meets with students for one-on-one meetings during lunch or after hours to make sure they understand the work and get the support they need to succeed.
“I’ve seen an immense amount of change, especially [at] the Las Vegas campus,” Dr. Nutter said. “I can tell you, the impact that we’ve had on students’ lives really has made a difference. We’re going in the right direction.”
She even jokes that she lives and dies by her sticky notes for keeping track of her schedule. She even uses them to take notes and leave reminders on how she can help her students thrive in the classroom and apply their knowledge to the real world once they graduate.
“You never know what kind of student you’re going to have in the class, and that’s why you need to tailor the learning to their learning needs,” Dr. Nutter explained. “I think that’s what we do well at AZCN…we tailor the learning to the student, and I think that’s just a very important thing to do as an educator.”
The “Aha” Moments
What keeps Dr. Nutter coming back to work every day with a smile is the magical moment that the light bulb finally goes off for a student. In other words, this is their “aha moment.”
“It’s that moment when they really get the content and they can apply it. That really is something that is special to me in my life,” she said.
Currently, Dr. Nutter oversees 9th-semester clinicals where she guides her students through what it is like to work in the ER. According to Dr. Nutter, the ER often involves “moments of boredom and seconds of terror,” as it is a fast-paced environment.
She teaches her students everything they need to know when dealing with life-or-death situations. She walks them through exactly how to take everything they have learned in their classes about medicine and patient care and act quickly in the moments when it matters most.
She loves guiding her students through this intensity, turning potentially intimidating clinical hours into great learning opportunities.
Teaching 9th Semester Students and Beyond
At this stage in their nursing education, Dr. Nutter knows that students are often facing the exhaustion that often sets in right before graduation. As a mentor, she tries her best to be their loudest cheerleader and biggest fan, reminding her students that they have the strength and drive needed to finish and walk across that stage at graduation.
“I really enjoy teaching and just the whole process of seeing people grow,” she explained. “Coming in at [the] 5th semester and then seeing them at [the] 7th semester and then [the] 9th semester [and] how they’ve changed and mature [is beautiful].”
Dr. Nutter emphasized that nursing and being an educator are not just a job, but something that she loves to do and looks forward to every day. She is strongly aligned with the mission of the college and is committed to all of her students.
