What does a Medical Records Technician do?
Medical Records and Health Information Technicians, commonly referred to as Health Information Technicians, organize and manage health information data. They ensure its quality, accuracy, accessibility, and security in both paper and electronic systems. They use various classification systems to code and categorize patient information for insurance reimbursement purposes, for databases and registries, and to maintain patients’ medical and treatment histories.
What is the employment demand for Medical Records/Health Information Technician? 
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of Health Information Technicians or Medical Record Specialists is projected to grow 8% percent from 2022-2032, faster than the average for all occupations. The demand for health services is expected to increase as the population ages.
How do you become a Health Information Technician?
Typically a postsecondary certificate or diploma is required to enter the occupation, although they may have an associate’s degree. Many employers also require professional certification. Arizona College offers two programs for a Health Information Technician career: Health Information Specialist, which is a diploma program.
