# Communication in Massage Therapy

When working directly with clients, it is essential for
[Massage Therapists](https://www.arizonacollege.edu/all-programs/massage-therapy/how-to-become-a-massage-therapist/)
to not only practice effective massage techniques, but to listen and communicate
with their clients to create a peaceful, comfortable environment while
maintaining the highest levels of professionalism.

Before beginning a massage, it’s a good idea to sit down and explain the nature
of the massage and the techniques that will be used. This is a good time to
determine the massage pressure your client prefers and whether your client
desires music or quiet during their treatment. Always let your client know that
you welcome their questions and feedback during a massage session. When a client
knows what to expect from a massage, it will aid them in having the best
possible experience. A therapist should be able to put their patient at ease and
discuss any pain or discomfort the patient may be feeling.

During the massage, it is important to listen to your clients, be understanding,
and respond to their needs while offering them your undivided attention. Keep an
eye out for non-verbal communication cues when working with clients to help you
react to their needs. If your client seems uncomfortable or in pain, stop and
allow them to communicate how they are feeling. Massage Therapists who have a
friendly, empathetic personality will be able to quickly foster a trusting
relationship with their clients and, in turn, expand their client base.

Keep in mind that getting a massage can be an intimidating situation for some
clients. For this reason, Massage Therapists who make their clients feel
comfortable and at-ease set themselves up for success. To learn more about
