# How Much Do RNs Make?

Registered nurses in the United States earn a median salary of $93,600 annually.
Entry-level nurses in the 10th percentile earn approximately $66,030 per year,
while experienced nurses in the 90th percentile can earn $135,320 or more
annually (Source:
[Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2024](https://www.onetonline.org/link/localwages/29-1141.00)
). These competitive salaries reflect the value that healthcare systems place on
BSN-educated nursing professionals.

## Factors That Influence RN Salaries

Several factors impact your earning potential as a registered nurse with a
bachelor’s degree in nursing:

### Experience Level

Experience plays a significant role in compensation. Newer nurses typically
start near the lower end of the salary range, while experienced nurses can reach
the higher percentiles over time. Most nurses see steady salary growth
throughout their careers as they develop specialized skills and take on
additional responsibilities.

### Work Setting

Where you work affects your pay. Hospital-based nurses typically earn more than
those in outpatient clinics or physician offices. Specialized units like ICU,
emergency departments, and operating rooms often offer higher compensation than
general medical-surgical floors.

### Education Level

A bachelor’s degree in nursing often positions you for higher starting salaries
compared to associate degree holders. BSN-prepared nurses also qualify for
leadership and specialty roles that typically offer increased compensation.

### Geographic Location

Salaries vary across the United States. Metro areas generally offer higher
wages, while rural communities may offer lower compensation. To see median RN

## Understanding Your Total Compensation

RN salaries represent only part of your total compensation. Most healthcare
employers offer comprehensive benefits packages including health insurance,
retirement contributions, paid time off, and continuing education support. When
evaluating job offers, consider the full value of these benefits alongside base
salary.
